2022: Platform Launch

On February 13, 2022, ST Engineering announced the launch of the DroNet platform for the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in order to deliver cargo from shore to ship in Singapore. Sumitomo Corporation and Skyports were partners in this project.

During the pilot program, its participants will attract key customers to deliver cargo by sea unmanned aerial vehicles in order to create a delivery network capable of transporting goods weighing up to 7 kg, ST Engineering said in a press release.

Singapore launched a service for delivering goods to ships by drones

These are usually those goods and parcels that require urgent delivery, including documents related to the transfer of money to the crew of the ship. According to ST Engineering estimates, these parcels make up from 10% to 20% of the current logistics from shore to ship.

Compared to the traditional form of delivery by boat, operations using UAVs can significantly reduce response time and speed up the process of delivery from shore to ship, as well as reduce logistics costs, said ST Engineering. Replacing delivery with boats on UAVs also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to the overall efforts of the marine industry for sustainable development, the company added.

According to the company, customers will be mainly shipowners or foreign shipping companies, adding that the company is already working with the Norwegian maritime group Wilhelmsen.

ST Engineering said each member of the consortium will use its operational and technological capabilities to expand the use of UAVs to deliver cargo to anchored seagoing vessels.[1]
