2021: Detention in the case of treason

On August 12, 2021, it became known about the detention of the general director and chief designer of the Research Enterprise of Hypersonic Systems OJSC (NIPGS) Alexander Kuranov. He is suspected of high treason.

According to information from open sources, Kuranov is a doctor of technical sciences, professor of the Department of Systems and Management Technologies of St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, general director and chief designer of JSC Research Enterprise of Hypersonic Systems HC Leninets.

He is a specialist in the field of physics and plasma chemistry, for many years organizes the Russian-American International Symposium "Thermochemical and Plasma Processes in Aerodynamics" in St. Petersburg. The author of more than 120 scientific papers, including patents and copyright certificates, including a patent for a hypersonic aircraft with a ramjet engine.

2024: Sentence - 7 years for treason

On April 18, 2024, the St. Petersburg City Court sentenced the ex-head of the Research Enterprise of Hypersonic Systems OJSC (NIPGS) Alexander Kuranov. For treason, the scientist received seven years in a strict regime colony.

Kuranov, the former general director and chief designer of the NIPGS, was detained by FSB officers and was first placed in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. Later he was transferred to St. Petersburg. He is accused of committing a crime under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason). The case was considered behind closed doors in connection with the presence of the "Top Secret" stamp, and therefore the details were not officially disclosed.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, referring to information from open sources, the persecution of Kuranov is associated with scientific works in the field of hydrocarbon fuel in aircraft. According to investigators, the scientist handed over some scientific information to foreigners.

Kuranov, 76, faced up to 20 years in prison. The scientist secured a reduction in the term of imprisonment to seven years thanks to the conclusion of a pre-trial agreement on cooperation with the investigation. In addition, he testified against 77-year-old Novosibirsk scientist Alexander Maslov, whose case on charges of treason was considered in parallel in another courtroom. In addition to serving time in a maximum security penal colony, Kuranov will have to pay a fine of 100 thousand rubles.[2]
